|
|
I recently bought an Action Arms Galil scope mount for my Action Arms Galil 361.
The mount slides into the reciever groove, then is secured via a hex screw and thumb screw.
What is the proper method to tighten these screws down securely?
Thanks, Mike |

the proper method is to tighten untill there is no wiggle. tighting behond that with this mount ciould end up in a cracked or hole punched receiver.

honest to God I don't know , its one of those he said she said things that you can never track back, BUT I don't want no cracked receiver and all it needs to be is tight enough to not wiggle Right?

Yes, It can happen !!
I have seen a Galil receiver in Krebs shop with a hole in it from
some gorilla over torquing the hex bolt on the scope mount.
The receiver is very thin in that spot. |

Yes it can. And it happened to me.
Neither the IMI Galil handbook, or the box that the mount came in, had instructions on the proper installation of the mount. I bought the Action Arms mount new, and in the box.
Having performed mechanical work for a lifetime, I brought that hex nut to the point of contact, then felt that 1/8 turn beyond would give me the proper torque.
I was wrong! A cracked receiver was the result.
Thanks a lot, Action Arms/IMI for the lack of instructions!
Way back, I had contact with Dan Hoodenpyle, who was a seller of Galil items.
Something Dan informed me of, something that I never knew, was that when the Galil 308 was manufactured, IMI kept the outer dimensions of the receiver that the 223 was built on.
Consequently the receiver walls for the 308 are thinner than that for the 223.
I would suggest that you use Red Loctite, and bring the hex screw/dove tail assembly to just the a hair beyond contact, so there is no wiggle.
Or get the original IMI mount, Dan told me that it is harder to damage the receiver with those mounts....But like the Action Arms mount, there is a proper way to install those steel IMI mounts...and of course, no instructions. |
