This site really needs an off-topic section..

Post by zz_denis » Thu Jul 28, 2011 8:31 am

Am i the only one extremly annoyed by the fact that more than half of threads in the "Valmet general discussion" section of these boards have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Valmets?

Its pretty embarassing in my opinion. I showed this site to my friend (also a Valmet enthusiast) and his first words were "Wow, what a spamfest". Needless to say, he refused to join.

Most of these threads have two things in common - they are created by the same individual and have zero replies.

I might sound harsh, but i love visiting this site to learn and share info about Valmets. The amount of spam makes it difficult to look for actual VALMET topics, especially when looking through older threads.
There is nothing wrong with posting off-topic stuff, but it doesnt belong in the main forum section IMO.

I think there's a general "understanding" that the Valmet General Discussion board, while intended for Valmet discussions, is also a good location for other topics that may be of common interest to the board's membership. Political topics (and/or funnies), "tactical" topics, historical topics, etc. have frequently been posted there. I wouldn't call any of that "spam." I, too, usually don't have much trouble distinguishing which topics are Valmet related and which are not. There aren't too many new postings during a day (or week), so it doesn't take me very long to scroll through them to decide if I want to read any.

Still... your (and your friend's) point is fair. Perhaps the owner / moderators will consider creating a more general, catch-all category.

I'd suggest you ask your friend to reconsider. There's a lot of Valmet information here that he/she might find of value. We'd all certainly appreciate anything of value he/she could ad to the discussions.

I do agree that many of those topics posted might be of interest to the members here, but that still doesn't make them "Valmet" topics.

Pretty much every single thread from any of the other sections of this site (Galil discussion, AK discussion, marketplace, etc) has more to do with Valmets than these "off-topic" threads, yet they have their own sections on this site.

There are many members on these boards who don't even live in US, who don't find these (political, historical, "funny") topics interesting at all. Would you be OK with these members (from Finland, Canada, Germany, etc), making almost daily threads in the "Valmet General Discussion" that are completely irrelevant, about issues that they personally find interesting?

Im sure that most members here wouldnt mind seeing pictures of good looking naked women. Should i start copy/pasting these pics/videos from various porn forums into the Valmet section also?

None of the numerous firearm boards that i frequent would consider this acceptable. I cant think of a single forum on the Internet where more than half of the threads in the MAIN section are completely off-topic.

I know i sound harsh, but it's something that's been bugging me for a while now and i needed to vent :)

I frequent many gun boards too and see little spam here in the Valmet forum. This board is much smaller than most gun boards because the Valmet community is relatively small to begin with.

That being said, I have started a new discussion area for off topic discussion. If anyone comes up with a better name or description for this area, you will get a free years subscription to this forum. :D
