Springfield Import 308 Galil Sport WTK need info

Post by Robert @ RTG Parts » Fri Jan 09, 2009 4:08 pm

A customer of mine has a Springfield imported 308 Galil sprorter. It has no model designation on it. It has the long ARM barrel, QD bipod, bayo lug, galil flash hider installed with folding stock.

Can this be an original configuration or did somebody put it together.

Robert...

I looked back in some of my old magazines and only found one reference to the Springfield Galil Sporter. It looks to me that the "sporter" was originally put together with a thumbhole type stock and had no provision to mount a bayonet. The muzzle attachment looks screwy too. I'm guessing your customer's rifle is a "build" using an original sporter receiver. Here is photo of the old G&A reference:

If you have seen a Springfield .308 Post ban did it have the receiver cut fooor the scope mount. all the later Hadar's I have seen did not.

So what is the deal with these. I remember they came with the butthole stock and the bayo lug removed. Can you install a folding stock and flash supressor on these and be legal shmegal?

No. unfortunately, doing what you suggest would not be strictly legal. Theoretically, you could "convert" the rifle and make it legal. It depends on your state of residence and whether you can find enough U.S. made parts to make its conversion to an "assault rifle" legal. I don't know whether U.S. made parts exist. If not, I suspect their fabrication would be very expensive.

Best advice... If you have one already, I'd leave it in its existing configuration and "admire" it as a remnant from the 1989 / 1994 ban. If you don't have one, I'd suggest you simply purchase a pre-1989 ban model.

Here's how you can get to where you want (if your state doesn't have its own ban)...

U.S. made parts (for 922r compliance):

1) Ace pistol grip
2) Gas piston by CNC Warrior
3) Wood Forearm by Old South Gun Wood
4) Hammer by Red Star Arms
5) Disconnector by Red Star Arms

Foreign parts count:

1) Galil Barrel
2) Galil Flash Hider
3) Galil Bolt
4) Galil Bolt Carrier
5) Galil Folding Stock
6) Galil Trigger
7) Galil Receiver
8) Galil Mag Body
9) Galil Mag Floorplate
10) Galil Mag Follower

But then again, it's probably easier to just buy Mike's!

Now we are getting somewhere. Red Star has a Hammer, Trigger, & Disconnector set so that counts as 3 compliant parts right? If so does that mean I do not need the new forend from your list?

I would but I have one already.
It is the only AA 386 that I have seen with a bayo lug.

That is correct—you would not need the forend. The RSA trigger is adjustable and feels very nice. Only thing is that it does not look like the original Galil. Alternatively, I believe there are also U.S made reproduction flash hiders available. Or you could count three parts by using the new Tapco Galil mags which are coming out soon (but I really don't recommend that approach).

This is just to show that there are (reversible) options out there for your rifle. And if people don't support the U.S. vendors who make Galil-specific products, then these parts might go away for good. And yet thankfully, they can't go to China, either.

I've got way too many Israeli mags to want to have to start using US made ones. I greatly appreciate the information and most importantly that you also were so kind as to provide the vendor from which I can buy these parts. Just one thing, I went to Ace's web site and they only list an Galil style grip for the AK. Does that fit the Galil, or do they have a different one available as well? I'll probably give them a call tomorrow, but in the meantime I'm just curious. Thanks again.

That TDI grip is made in Israel, which defeats the purpose for me. Besides, I love the original Galil grip. Ace is currently out of stock. Are there any other US made grips that look original?
