New member with M76. Here to learn!

Post by Dreamlinedoutdoors » Thu Jan 17, 2019 11:33 am

Good afternoon everyone and thank you for accepting me into the forum! I’m new to Valmet and I think I’ve exhausted all my online research available on my M76. I’m excited to learn more about these awesome firearms from those passionate about this collection!

I was very fortunate and picked up a Valmet M76 for an awesome deal.(initially not realizing the value and quality of this brand from my lack of familiarity with Valmet.) However, I rolled the dice and made the purchase. At first, I thought it was a pieced together firearm due to the mismatched forearm and stock. Haha don’t judge.

Anyways, I greatly appreciate your help in some history behind this awesome firearm! It is a Valmet M76W in .223/.556 in good shape. My curiosity is listed below:
1.) my serial number is quite lower than all the other Valmet M76 listed for sale on GB and other sites. Is this any significance?
2.) i was told they were imported into New York and there was only 1000 approximately imported. However, my M76 does not have the Valmet New York stamp on the bottom side of the receiver.
3.) I have 2 original 30 round magazines with the M76. What would be fair market value for this firearm based on the details provided?

Thank you again for the support and I look forward to learning from you all.

So...what is your serial number? 12,XXX range? 16,XXX range?

Serial is 157XXX. When I looked at other serial numbers this seemed low if the 1000 imported into the US were accurate.

Welcome to the site!!! :D
Nothing really special about 157XXX--- serial numbers started at 155XXX.
The ones serialized No 157XXX and No 158XXX were Elmsford and Interarms imports--- those 157XXX and 158XXX (no "No" prefix) had no importer markings and are considered Canadian "imports". :)
Your furniture is probably the black plastic grip and forearm with wood buttstock.

Tony, that was exactly the information I was looking for! Thank you for the insight on the serial numbers and the history.

I have my sights on buying a Barrett 50bmg I’ve always wanted. That being said, I may sell my M76 to help fund my this purchase. What would be a good range to sell this M76 with two 30rd original magazines? I know the mags alone are worth a nice chunck and the M76 appears to be very desirable.

Then again, I’m proud to own this unique and awesome variant and may keep it unless the right collector can talk me out of it.

Dreamlinedoutdoors.... welcome to the site. You'll find a lot of good, useful information here.

Nice looking rifle. Is the stock on your rifle wood? Is it possible that your rifle's original wood stock was replaced or painted? I can't quite tell from your picture. Does the other side of the your rifle's stock have an inletted bar for sling attachment?

Goodguy, I appreciate the welcoming! I think the iphone photo gives the stock a dark appearance. It does not appear this gun has been modified from the original form. The stock is all wood and the other side does have the inletted bar for the sling.

Cool. Based on the description and photo, I'd estimate the fair value of the rifle and magazines would be on the order of $1,800. It would be a good idea to monitor some of the firearm auction sites to better evaluate what your rifle might be currently worth to others.
