Valmet M71 Question???

Post by M62/M76 » Sun Aug 28, 2016 10:13 pm

For the Experts:

What configuration did the M71 come to the US in?

I believe all were .223.
I believe all stocks were either wood or the black resin.

Were there ever any tube stocks???

Thanks,
Mike

Mike...

I'm not an expert, but here goes... Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. The Finns produced some military RK71 rifles chambered in 7.62x39 during the early 1970s. These rifles had fixed tube stocks, and at least a few had Russian style AK underfolder stocks.

The M71 was the commercial export version of the RK71. Most (maybe all?) of the M71 models that were imported into the USA were chambered in 5.56x45 NATO. I've seen M71s in the USA with factory polymer (resin) stocks and wood stocks and aftermarket (ACE?) side folding stocks. I've never seen a commercial M71 with a tube stock (fixed or folding) or underfolder type stock.

I’m aware of one rare M71 variation (and it might actually be an RK71) with a wooden stock that was factory chambered in 7.62 x 39… In the late 1970s Valmet built 50 chrome-plated model 71 rifles in 7.62x39 for the Qatar royal guard. The stock, pistol grip and fore end were of walnut and the butt stock had a silver medallion inset on the stock. I don’t know whether these were select-fire or not, but I seem to remember one coming up for sale in the USA some years ago. Then again, I may be mistaken about that.

Hope that helps some. Maybe Tony or someone else will chime in.
