Milled Vs. Stamped M78 Bolt comparison

Post by Lima » Mon Jun 13, 2016 4:13 pm

Interesting comparison between two M78 bolts.

The one on the left side of the pictures is from a stamped .308, the right side is a milled .308. I always thought they were the same but aside from different bottom profile, they have two key dimensional differences:

1) Forward part of the locking lug is 2x bigger on the milled
2) Slot for the ejector on stamped can take a #39 drill 0.099". Where the milled is bigger, #32 drill 0.116"

The biggest functional difference is that the longer locking lug for the milled gun won't clear the inside of the trunion of a stamped gun. I think a bolt for a stamped gun will work in a milled gun though. Milled M76 .308 bolts are the same as bolts for a milled M78.
