Accuracy of M78/83S sniper?

Post by WeekendWarrior » Wed Jun 24, 2015 1:15 pm

Hello all! First time Finnish poster here. Been used to Valmet and Sako rifles in the Finnish army, but I was surprised to see that there are quite a few variants and apparently stuff that was never(?) available here in Finland.

My particular interest is in the M78/83S semi-auto sniper rifle in .308. What kind of accuracy can be expected from this oddball? 1½-2 MOA?

Cheers from any insights! I see there is a lot of expertise on these forums 8)

Welcome to the site!!! :D
I do not believe that I have read any ballistics information on the M78/83S--- I would imagine it has the same accuracy as the M78.
Do you have one?

Thanks! Well, how accurate is the M78 then? :)

I don't own Valmet or Sako rifles myself, but I do get to use them in reservist training every once in a while. I would be very interested in the M92 though :p

Used civilian version M62/M92 rifles are quite expensive nowadays in Finland, usually around 1600-2200 USD and with that money, especially sport shooters, can get a decent AR platform that suits better for competition shooting.

...and those who want to field 7,62x39 rifles will go for Arsenal or Saiga rifles as they are cheaper and have chromed barrels.

About 10 years ago I took my 78/83s to the range.
ZFM10x fixed optics. Several sub MOA ***(5 shot groups)***does that help.
168 gr FGMM. ^^^^^^^^^

No pics. I may have posted this information years ago.

Nib,

I do trust you.

However, a scientific study of one is not science. Nor is it science without measurements and documentation.

I don't know if the forum is large or active enough to generate data. Maybe you could see if your individual results are reproducible? I have m-88s. The hunter/petra varients with thinner barrels. Would my imput be welcome? If so should I note the time between shots?

Any added information with documentation is greatly appreciated.
I may have to dig out the 78/83s with some fresh Lapua or FGMM and see if I can reproduce the groups.

Also if it helps, I have always allowed cool down between shots.
On my target rifles I clean the bore every 5th shot.

To name a few.

Hello NIB, Just re activated membership. Just retired.Family issues totally preoccupied me after I first joined in 2015. Been buying every Valmet I can afford as I can, to the exclusion of almost everything else.

GREAT signature, couldn't have said it better myself!! Makes me smile every time I see it.

May I please steal it! Just kidding but ditto for myself and I swear to God
I'll stop as well.
God grant me the serenity to accept that I can't afford buy every Valmet I see! :) :(
