Getting closer........to a "M-62"

Post by RM308 » Sun Aug 08, 2010 4:01 pm

Getting closer to sending everything I have collected off to be reassembled into a clone of a M62 in 7.62X39. I know it's been done before and probably done better, but it's probably as close as I can achieve.

Here's what I have so far:
Image

I had a friend of mine add the lightning cuts in the donor reciever (Polytech Hunter). It's next to the receiver that will be the donor for the rear.
Image

Oh, the other receiver is a ORF "non receiver" I picked up a while back.
Image

I have to get:
1) the receiver work done (weld on the rear)
2) shorten the barrel
3) adapt the handguards to it
4) install the new gas block
5) Mill the flash hider to look like a M62 (remove the front sight)
6) Figure out how to attach the rear stock,
The rest is pretty easy.

Any advice or comments?

Thanks

Nice collection of parts. Why not try for a tube folder instead with that galil rear stub? What's a "non-receiver"?

I'd really love to have a tube folder, but where would I find those parts? It was quite some time just finding what I have now.

The receiver is an ORF Galil receiver that was supposedly "out of spec" and never serialized, sold as "scrap". I see that the bottom of the receiver is very thin, the rest seems to be OK, but I know it has never been heat treated. I picked up 2 when there were no galil stubs to be had a while back.

Thanks

Very nice. Before you chop that non receiver, try Apex, they have de-milled Galil receivers for $20.

Here's some pics of my Norinco conversionm done as a Galil.

I had a rear receiver piece from a Galil I bought from Ontario Guns a couple years back, $44 and shipping, hack sawwed off what I needed, ground to spec then had it welded to the Norinco receiver.
Works super.
Good luck with your build.

Also, I know there is someone in Finland that had some tube folder buttplates a couple months back.
I also happen to know that a standard AR buttstock buffer tube fits the Valmet buttplae unit and is REALLLLLLLY close in spec to the Galil rear receiver hole.
FWIW, I had a nice collection of Valmet parts last year, I was going to try the same build but couldn't ever find a front handguard retainer for the Valmet HGs, so gave up on it.

Nice build you have there. I did work our a deal with someone here on the board to trade for the rear stub I will need. Hope mine turns out as well as yours.

Now I have to think of something to do with the "non-receivers" The only idea so far is some kind of "sub caliber blowback valmet/galil clone dealie". Maybe one in 7.62X25 and one in 9X19. Pretty goofy, huh?

WOW, I saw this and ran down to the basement, grabbed a AR buffer tube and a galil receiver...........and you're right. This could work on the clone I have in mind. Thanks for the suggestion.

And collecting the parts for this has been quite a journey of searching and lucky breaks. Sorry you gave up the quest.

Thanks

Glad to help. So you know, the Valmet buttplate unit does fit right onto the AR buffer tube. When I was working on my concept build, I was thinking of just drilling and pinning it on the tube.
Contact that member in Finland, think he might have some available.
Also, post pics when you get it all done, should make a really nice rifle.

Agg, thanks for the compliment. Lot of work, but nice result.

Sadly, no. Still all boxed up. Have all the parts, but my builder is really backed up.

I hope it is soon though!

Due to changing priorities and the realization that I just can't build everything I have collected and have waiting to be built, I think I may have to put this collection of M62-76 parts up for sale. I know how much I spent to get to this point, but realizing prices are down from the peak, I'm wondering how much I should ask for this clone package?

Since the pictures were taken I have added a galil rear stub, a Valmet tube stock rear end and a AR buffer tube. So someone could build it as a wood stock or tube stock (and even a TF if they could find the folding mechanism). I also got rid of the extra Polytech parts not needed for this 7.62x39 M62-76 build.

Any opinions on what can I reasonably expect to get for a unfinished project like this? Or should I just part it out?

Opinions appreciated.

Thanks RM308

Moved to WTS.

Not planning on parting it out, want it to find a good home.
