Valmet M-76 Stamped receiver question

Post by HKgunslinger » Tue Aug 18, 2009 10:57 am

Do Valmet M-76 stamped-receiver rifles have a threaded trunnion like the milled rifles? Or is it press-and-pin like most other stamped AKs? I'm thinking of making a clone rifle, seeing how feasible that will be. Thanks!

Threaded for sure, the rear sight base is totally different from regular AKs....

OK, next question, along the same lines:

1) Is the barrel thread pitch and size the same for both the stamped and milled receiver Valmets? and...

is that the same pitch and thread size of the Galil? I do not know what size my Galil receiver-end thread is,...but I could pull it out if need be to check it,...the main thing is that I know ORF sells 7.62x39 barrels that WILL fit a Galil receiver,...so if the Valmet thread is the same,...then bingo!, there goes ONE problem.

Maybe I should just buy a Valmet and be done with it, probably end up spending a lot less money. But I'm one of those types who would rather go through hell and back, just to say "Lookit what I dun!" :D I'm not kidding,...its a problem.

Any answers appreciated!

Gunslinger, did you ever discover what the thread size/pitch is at the Valmet muzzle end? Is it the same as a Galil 308, by any chance (25x1.5 RH)?

Here's what I think I know. Galil barrels are threaded M21X1,5 (in .223) and M25X1.5 (in 308). The one and only M78 barrel in .308 I ever saw (not installed) the threading on the chamber end was LARGER than M25X1.5. I know this because I had an original IMI .308 barrel side by side with it and was originally thinking about geting an ORF 308 Galil receiver to use the with the Valmet barrel I had, but saw that they would not fit unless re-threaded.

And here is my disclaimer. I know nothing about a M76 and it's thread pattern. Never saw one apart.

Interesting. I wonder how hard it would be to open up and rethread an ORF milled receiver to fit the larger Valmet barrel.

Now I know...

For future reference, 7.62x39 barrel/trunnion thread measures 25mm x 1.5.

Sorry for a question that is slightly off-topic, but do you guys know what is needed to unscrew the barrel on a milled receiver .308 M76 (or M78, or M88). Is there is pin that has to be removed/pressed out first?
Thanks!
