Bought a 71S about a month ago.
Has the crappy plastic stock.
Haven't had a chance to shot it yet.
Maybe now that spring is here, I'll be able to.

Good buy. The plastic stock is OK as long as it's not cracked (or not cracked too badly). It might be worth the effort to replace the plastic stock, however, with a wood stock if you can get one.

I've been priced out of the last Valmet on my list. Someday I'll find that childless, terminally ill 99 year old billionaires that I have always dreamed of marrying. Then I will buy every Valmet on Earth and rule the universe with an iron fist!

For a collector an uncracked plastic is great. But if it's a rifle you intend to shoot buy a cracked stock and replace it with a galil folder or wood. Valmet did not R&D some of these civilian only options. Plastic 71 and 82 all crack eventually from use. Some 76 .308 plastic have fallen to pieces while firing. I love Valmets but those options should have never left the factory.

I like the idea of a galil folder.
Does the wood stock from an M76 fit a 71?

I haven't really thought too much about it, but the last 3 I purchased were from estates too. Oh my.... maybe we're all dying off!

I'm going to have to buy you lunch at the best Mexican joint in town. I'll be at the show part of the day but will not be set up as a vendor...just a vulture looking for deals. Do you have time for a Valmet.org desert MG shoot that weekend. This is the nicest time of year to blow stuff up.
