I think there's a general "understanding" that the Valmet General Discussion board, while intended for Valmet discussions, is also a good location for other topics that may be of common interest to the board's membership. Political topics (and/or funnies), "tactical" topics, historical topics, etc....

This site really needs an off-topic section..

Am i the only one extremly annoyed by the fact that more than half of threads in the "Valmet general discussion" section of these boards have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Valmets? Its pretty embarassing in my opinion. I showed this site to my friend (also a Valmet enthusiast) and his first words we...

The reason i want to modify the rifle to accept the M78 mags is not only the cost of mags (cost difference between m78 and m76 .308 mags is not very significant), but also the quality of mags. M78 mags look and feel a lot stronger because of the added sideplates. Reliability would be affected, and t...

Valmet M76 and M78 .308 magazine question

It seems that M78 and M76 mags in .308 are identical except for the added sideplates on the M78 mags. M78 mags seem to be cheaper and easier to find than M76 ones. They are also stronger because of the sideplates/thicker lips. I was wondering if anyone ever tried to remove some metal on the sides of...

Converting a Hunter to 7.62x39

Hi, I've been toying with the idea of converting a .308 Hunter to 7.62x39 caliber, making it similar to Norinco Hunter in x39. We cant get Norinco Hunters up here, nor can we get any other milled receiver AK's in 7.62x39. I have a spare .308 Hunter laying around and a ton of AK mags. Has anyone done...

Thanks ZZ Dennis for the info I really appreciate it! Much difference in performance or jamming with milled versus stamp, which is preferred? So for clips then what is biggest for 308 the 20 round clip, or is there a bigger one out there? Because of 308 caliber then I take it stamped receiver versu...

Samppa,

All Hunters (also known as M88) in North America have the front sight on the gas block, except for Hunters chambered in .30-06, which have it at the end of the barrel. I've never heard of the M83 designation. It might be unique to Europe.

Value of a gun like that in US with all the accessories would be around $2500-3000 depending on whether or not there are people that REALLY want it. In Canada, around $4500-5000 give or take a few hundred. You cant sell a gun to Canada without a ton of paperwork from the State department and such. B...

M62 would indeed make a good donor, but (as you know) there aren't many in Canada. I've never even seen one for sale. Besides, whats the point of going through all this trouble to make a gun that you cant even shoot.. Very sad... I dont like the idea of using the stamped M78 receiver. The end produc...

I have a couple of MCP 30-rounders for M78 and these mags look like converted G3 mags to me. Some factory .308 M78 mags (the parkerized ones) also look like modified G3 mags. M78 and M76 mags are identical except for the added sideplates on M78 mags. So i dont see why there would be any problems usi...

Sorry for a question that is slightly off-topic, but do you guys know what is needed to unscrew the barrel on a milled receiver .308 M76 (or M78, or M88). Is there is pin that has to be removed/pressed out first?
Thanks!

Removing barrels from milled receivers

Hi, I need to remove the barrel from a .308 Hunter. The receiver is very similar to the milled M78 and M76 in .308, so i suspect the barrel is mounted the same way. My gunsmith doesnt have any experience working with milled receiver Valmets, so he suggested i ask around first before he attempts it. ...

Magazines for M78 have sideplates welded on, on the upper part of the magazine. This is done for additional strength. Other than this, magazines for M78 and M88 in .308 are the same. Because of these sideplates, M78 mags are wider and will not fit into M88 magwell. You can modify M78 mags to work by...
