The Valmet M/62/S Transformed
into an AK-47
Yup.....and I found it way back in 1976 "walking" past my
tables at the Houston Astrohall gunshow.....paid $700 for it.......
Here's the story......1976...there are NO SEMI AK-47's
on the market....yes, believe it or not...before the
80's there were NO SEMI AK-47's....NONE!!!
There where Valmet M62/S semiauto's
for about $250...[yeah, I know OUCH!!] So, here comes this guy
walking past with an AK-47 on his shoulder....I ask to
see it..... He grins...."its a semi" he said.....
my eyebrow raised....yeah right!.....But wait what is this
on the receiver.....stamped big as Dallas.......M62/S 7.62x39 VALMET
INTERARMS,VA. Well, now I AM interested.....what in the hell is this
thing?
The owner tells me this..... it is a Valmet barreled
action WITH AK-47 parts!!! ok now....stop for a
minute....its 1976 and I am holding a SEMIAUTO AK47 in my
hands......a LEGAL AK-47 in my hands!!!! [please bear in
mind what I said earlier....in 1976 there were NO
SEMIAUTO AK-47's]...sounds kinda strange now doesn't it?
The AK wood was newly made wood....the rear
cover had the Valmet rear sight removed...you can see
the flat spot on the receiver cover in pic....the front sight was ground
off and contoured like.....look closely at pic......front flash hider
removed and replaced with AK front sight...... an
AK rear sight trunion was added to the barreled receiver..... here was
the hard part......building up the lower receiver
to match the AK lower handguard......steel metal was welded there and
even the lightening groove was shaped correctly....[again look at the
pic].
This guy said that he would never make another one
because it was a lot of work and back then AK parts were
very hard to find. So.....fast forward...a few years.....I would display
my new toy at the Houston Astrohall gunshows.....just to watch guys
reaction when they pick it up!!! "When did Valmet start making
AK's"...... most asked question..... next was "wanna sell it?"..... I
was offered lots of money.....many times.... but I was a collector.....
But by this time the Egyptian Maadi's were coming out along with the
early Clayco Chinese AK's......... so I finally did sell this RARE
Valmet to someone in the Austin,TX area....oh back about 1986 or
so....sold it for $600......some of you old locals to the Astrohall
shows may even remember seeing this Valmet on my tables. I wonder where
this rifle is today?
